PROJECT

Mobile Deposit

OVERVIEW

Yes, paper checks still exist. And yes, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union members—myself included, want to simply and efficiently deposit checks from anywhere. Believe me, any time our eDeposit feature was malfunctioning, we would hear about it.

MISSION

Our goal in the redesign of eDeposit was just that, to make depositing a check a breeze. To do this a team of mobile developers and myself set off to introduce a totally refreshed eDeposit featuring better rotation support, the addition of auto capture, a simpler and more directional user flow, and a cleaner UI.

AUDIENCE

  • Members who use, or potentially would use the MSUFCU mobile and/or web app to deposit checks

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The team consisted of four software developers, one UX designer, and a project manager. As the UX researcher and UI designer on this project I was responsible for creating a cleaner, more intuitive workflow and UI for both iOS and Android platforms.

SCOPE & CONSTRAINTS

We were upgrading vendor products for the image capture and processing, meaning that we had to fit our design within the vendor constraints, and work to align iOS and Android UI designs while respecting each platform’s inherent design patterns.

PROCESS

  1. My process for user research started with analyzing reviews in the iOS App and Google Play store. I searched for specific mentions of the current eDeposit product to better understand the feature’s successes and failures. In addition, I collected relevant feedback from our technical support team.

  2. Next, I analyzed the current IA and workflow in comparison to competitor products, noting similarities in functionality and design aspects.

  3. I shared my findings with members of the project team in order to create alignment on the scope and design concept.

  4. Together, we sketched a workflow and requirements that met a variety of user stories.

  5. Next, I designed an interactive prototype that accounted for the various user stories with oversight from the project team and upper management for buy-in and approval.

  6. Finally, I created digital content including images and copy to help clarify the process for users and worked with team members to ensure high quality implementation.

WHAT I LEARNED

  • The project provided an excellent opportunity for us to respond directly to users feedback, and our updates significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of our users depositing checks on the mobile devices.

  • We learned that with too many people influencing and directing design, design could be a bottleneck in the development lifecycle.
